That last post?
So in my last post I talked about being amazed at the lengths to which students would go to avoid saying "I don't know."

Proving that the universe has a sense of humor, I have just come across a student who answered a question, quite simply, "I don't know."

(and I don't blame them; that's the trickiest question on the homework and I'm still not certain I get it. It's one of those things where the more you think about it, the less sense it makes.)

These are Grad Students, yes? You should point out to them that part of their thesis/dissertation defense/prelims/etc will be questions that they're not supposed to know -- and their committee is going to want to see how they handle the "not knowing." They'd better get used to saying "I don't know but I can find out" now!

This class is all planners, and I'm not sure what they do for their major work. My course, public policy, requires a "practicum" where we form groups and work on an issue for a real-life client, creating a policy proposal and implementation strategy. We don't have theses... a fact which made me rather upset, actually, as I was looking forward to knowing exactly what I was doing on one! (my undergrad required what was nearly a master's-level thesis of all students. I think mine clocked in at 40 pages, and I didn't go for honors which would have been longer and required an oral defense.)

Let's see... *grabs website*... looks like planners do comps.

If there's an oral component to it .......

I actually enjoyed the writing. The endless revisions, not so much. :-S

See, only about the first half of my thesis got to be revised endlessly. I ran smack into deadlines...

I was kinda looking forward to getting to do it again -- correctly -- but it is not to be. :P Someday I'll revise and finish the undergrad one.

I love deadlines. I especially love the whooshing sound as they zoom by ....

You'll just have to go for an additional degree! :-)

ducking and running now.
